Just finished 3mo. in AU (Jan, Feb, Mar) would love to go back again. It's bloody expensive their. So take lots of money. I would leave a little later if I were U, it's cool in the south, (exspecially in Tasmania) & peak tourist season in the north.(Apr-Nov) I wasn't able to take my own bike, as I couldn't get a Carney at the time. So ended up renting a DR650. I met a few people who bought a bike, but they were staying for 6 months & more. If your shipping your bike to AU there's a company in AU (BikesAbroad) that are amazing. Will ship any where in the world. Let me know how your making out, & if I can help at all. I'm 68 so your probably not interested in travelling with a old man.

As a budget traveler, I am always looking to stretch a dollar and the duration of a vacation by taking advantage of campgrounds, BLM property camp sites, stealth camping or affordable hotels, cooking and aquatic centers/YMCA's for showers. During my last trip, I camped 55/60 nights. Would you please elaborate on your 'bloody expensive' comment? Did you try to camp to save money or did you simply use hotels?

I am interested in your relatively current feedback about lodging options since I am planning to visit Australia in late October. An Australian buddy offered his F800GS, but I am looking at shipping my Africa Twin. Everything I am reading about Australia sounds absolutely wonderful and I will probably travel for more months than I care to leave my buddy without his motorcycle... perhaps 4-5 months.

I'll try to search for a ride report in the forum. If available, please share a ride report if you have one posted on the Internet. I would love to read about where you traveled during your three-month visit.

Food is exspensive, minimum wage is $20.00 a hour. Didn't meet any one making less the $25. I did motel it most of the time, I didn't think motels were that much any where from $85 - $140.

Yes Australia is expensive. So is Europe, America etc etc.

You can minimise your expenses - shop in supermarkets for your food (breakfast, lunch and dinner), minimise your consumption of alcohol, camp, reduce your cruising speed and minimise your time in the expensive places.

Of course every now and then - splurge! Have a bit of luxury just so you experience that too - dinner out at an expensive (but good) restaurant, a hotel stay etc. A balance between saving and enjoyment is the goal.

Im retired and am free most times for extended trips around Australia. Nearly all my travelling has been solo but am looking for some like minded motorbike travellers who are interested in touring Australia. Im no longer into 600km+ days at full tilt, but rather enjoy the journey, stopping for the sights, meeting the locals and a or two. Don't mind a mix of camping and cheap accommodation, often pubs. A hot shower, cold , cooked meal and a bed appeal after a hard day's ride.
Been travelling/riding for 30+ yrs, don't get fazed by stuff, breakdowns, accidents, etc are part of the deal.
