@caravanistan,, if you guys read this post then please provide your input. Much Much appreciated!!!

I have done the highest motorable roads in Himalaya's few times and Karakorum's and now Pamirs are calling.

I don't think it's a good idea. For many years now the north of Afghanistan has been unstable in the region of Kunduz, including the border crossing with Tajikistan. Since the Taliban takeover, the situation has not improved as far as I can see, with recent attacks in the north from (I believe) ISIK.

When the Taliban took over in 2021, Dushanbe shut its border with Afghanistan and is very fearful of the import of Islamic extremists. Check eurasianet.org and see if there is any news of the border opening - I have not heard anything though.

Coming in from Uzbekistan might be safer (I have no idea if the border is currently open) but the security situation is not clear. A friend of mine who has run tours for years in Afghanistan has not been back since the events of last year.

Afghanistan is not a country to casually visit, it needs preparations, contacts and good intelligence.

(Drove across Afghanistan in 2009/10 and have not heard of anyone doing it since)

@Eurasiaoverland, what's your view of the security situation in the Pamirs (Tajikistan) for foreign travellers?

I'm not really keeping an eye on Central Asia at present, as I mentioned before (had to correct the address), eurasianet.org is a good source of information. My understanding is that there is trouble brewing between the Dushanbe government and the Pamiris, I would guess that security for a foreign visitor is fine as the problems are political, but that is just a guess.

@eurasiaoverland.. Thank you for all the insight. There are few other threads where sme trotters travelled from Tajijistan to Afghanistan in 2018/2019. But, I guess who dynamics have changed since last August.

I was originally planned to go in 2020 from Pakistan to Kabul but then Covi hit. Tried again in 2021 but Pakistan consulate in NYC are lethargic and kept my tourist visa application pending for 1 year without any response and still did not give me any reponse to why they will not process my visa. Never seen any ridiculous visa process than this consulate.

Only after above happened I am looking at alternative route to ride to Kabul and out. Someone has recently posted few videos on life in Afghanistan on youtube, I have contacted then as well. I will keep the forum posted if I find any useful information for anyone who is Keen to explore Kabul in current times.

I'll double-check with contact in Dushanbe but it's probably safe as usual. Border with Kyrgyzstan was closed due to conflict so you have to get in and out through Uzbekistan. Make sure you get Pamir permit when you apply for TJ visa and be ready there will be many checkpoints along the way.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
