Spomenik PT.2

Hi Folks!

This will be my part 2 of the Spomenik/Brutalist trip across balkans (and more).
Leaving from Italy on October 2nd, anticlockwise through Albania, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, (Maybe Romania) Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro and back through Croatia. Some 300kms per day, for a grand total of circa 6k in roughly 20 days.

I ride solo mostly with tent (wild and established camping) and stove but I enjoy some good sleep in a nice room.

Looking for hints, tips, not-to-be-missed roads, pals to ride along, sofas to sleep on in change of some chitchat ;-)

Ride safe!

Massimo

Hi,

we just returned from a 4 week Balkan 4wheel trip with focus on Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo and North Macedonia.

Personal highlights were:
Petrova Gora monument ,Petrova Gora, Croatia
Monument to the Revolution, Podgarić, Croatia
Bogdan Bogdanovic’s concrete flower and Jasenovac memorial site, Jasenovac ,Croatia
Battle of Sutjeska Monument, Sutjeska National Park, Bosina-Herzegowina
The Ilinden Uprising Monument or Makedonium, Kruševo, North Macedonia
The massive Kadinjača Memorial Complex, Užice, Serbia

There are also plenty of Brutalist buildings. A good database is
www.sosbrutalism.org

our highlights
National Library of Kosovo, Prestina, Kosovo
Youth Centre, Prestina, Kosovo (there is a carpark in the arena if you find the entrance, very cool)

Skopje is a bit of a wannabe Ashgabat and Disneyland capital but Telecommunication building and University are great sights for brutalist fans.

Have fun and watch the boarder queues. We spent 7,5 hours at the Serbia Croatia boarder. None of the internet times were correct.

Best regards
Bernd

Hi Bernd!

Thanks for your contribution. Those are exactly the spomeniks I went for two yrs ago (except the Makedonium, which is on my radar for the "southernmost" spomenik pt2.
Thank you for the concrete highlights (Yes, I'm into brutalism too )
Will surely take note!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
