I have to say that Buenas Cosas was one of my most memorable experiences of my year long adventure through central and South America. They provided the platform for me to experience a way of life that would have otherwise never been possible. I developed relationships, experienced Guatemalan culture, and saw nature and life in a whole new way thanks to the Buenas Cosas family.
I recommend the grande program with a week stay at the main house, then a poco week in a home stay either with Olga or Lesbia and their families for a more cultural experience. Leave the internet behind for a week and enjoy nature, home made food and life off the grid. I spent two weeks with the family and four weeks with Olga and Jaime and 12 other family members in San Pedro on the opposite side of Lake Peten Itza where we had our own house on the lake near Francis Ford Copalas vacation home! Went to Tikal, the Local hidden caves, the shops and restaurants on island of flores (try cool beans), the Santa Elena market, the Santa Elena Carnival (ferris wheel & concert), fished in Lake Peten with a hand line, toured San Jose and El Remate, hiked through the jungle and found howler monkeys (jaime made a good guide), learned to cook local cuisine, swam and boated in Lake Itza, and on my way south I made it to Semuc Champey.
Thanks again Memo, Angelica, Olga, Jaime, Lettie, Zaira, Margarita, Wilson, Reyna, rebecca and little man. Hanging out with Memo was a rewarding experience because he can tell you anything about the area, permaculture, gardening, guatemalan politics and his welcome tour is quite fun. Angelica is the best cook in Guatemala and don't hesitate to ask to learn how to cook one of her many famous recipes. She even let me tag along with her and the kids to her local church and Had a blast even though my spanish was not the best. Olga is like a second mom to everyone and Jaime took all the volunteers to his sons soccer game in San Jose. Olga and Jaime treated us like family.
While we all come from different walks of life and parts of the world in our travels we almost never meet at a dinner table in a third world country! But this happened here, and in a comforting friendly family atmosphere. You will truly cherish your time here. It will be what you make of it, as the opportunities are endless as it is a self paced environment. We made 3 chicken houses from scrap lumber and delivered them each with laying hens to local families. We got lots of laughs as we made our way through the barrio with a chicken house on the back of a motorcycle. So, Bring your own ideas and get creative. Seldom do you get the opportunity to make a difference, make the world a better place and avoid the smelly and loud hostels where for the same price you can experience so much more.
Gracias Buenas Cosas
Muchos Bendiciones,
Paz, amor, y Buenas Cosas
