Thailand/Laos - new rules for temporary motorcycle import as of first of June 2016
I´ve heard, there a new rules in place for temporary import of motorcycles to Thailand and Laos.
What I have heard about the new Thai procedure:
- you need a permit of the Department of Transport, which you get through an agency in advance of your arrival
- the permit specifies the border crossing for entry and exit, the provinces you are allowed to travel to and fixed dates or periods for entry/exit
- 30 days maximum stay
- 6000 THB costs
I found a offical announcement, that speaks of 500 THB, but that might be only a fraction of the total costs, since the agency will not do it for free.

Seems that Laos has introduced simular rules.
Can anybody confirm this?
Anybody experiences with the new rules?
Regards
Panny

Can't enter Laos at Huay Kon now :)
Hey all,
Just got bounced at the Huay Kon border between Thailand and Laos. Apparently it has something to do with the China. However, my understanding at this point is that it's a Laotian enforcement that differs between provinces. So, I was told to try crossing directly into VT. A Thai office said it was possible on a bike bigger than 250cc. Trying this morning.... will let you know how it goes.
at the Huay Kon border Thais were insanely helpful and well informed. They confirmed that I could get stamped out and get TEP, but also confirmed that Laos wouldn't let me in. So, they suggested I try another border.
Safe riding!

Mother Goose and overlander gosslings soon to be
As of December 15, things appear to be tightening up quickly in Thailand re: guides and independent travel through the country. If your permit has not been already approved it looks like you'll have to pay for a minder (aka "guide") and a pre-approved flight plan. Here is a link to the latest "news," from Ride Asia forum:
Temp. Importing a Foriegn Reg. Mbike into Thailand - Page 10
This will be a hot topic at the HU Mini-Meeting January 6 & 7, 2017, with experts present from a qualified travel agency.
Looks like the days of free roaming overlanding on foreign (except Malaysia) motorbikes/vehicles through Thailand are history. Soon it will be follow the tail light in front of you. :-( much the same as Myanmar and China.
Kindly don't shoot the messengers.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
