Carnet to go to Europe from UK?
There’s a breathless and excitable MCN article this week about how race bikes will need a carnet to travel to Europe, and people are extrapolating this to mean that if you carry a bike in a van or on a trailer to ride when you get there it will need a carnet. I’ve done this lots of times to get a dirt or travel bike to the start of the trails.
If someone takes their own bike and 2-3 road registered road legal bike with V5, belonging to mates, in a van from the UK to ride in Spain or Portugal, does anyone think that will need a carnet?

There is a different between paying a transport company to move tools to make money and taking personal possessions as luggage (hence the question "business or pleasure" at customs) . You would need a temporary import for the former but not I think a road bike carnet. A mates bike may attract awkward questions if customs want to be a PITA, but still basically luggage IMHO. It would be better if your mates were in the van with you.

It would be better to have owners with, but the plan is I take the bikes and they fly in, and in any case I can’t fit 4 people in the van.
It shouldn’t be a problem but no doubt my mates would be upset if I had to offload their bikes and leave them on the quayside .
Anyone got any actual data?

Can't imagine a carnet being required since neither "area" requires a carnet normally for entry from anywhere.

I understand from a friend that was organising 6 of our bike from Uk to Spain that there are a lot of hoops to jump through and additional costs now...so much that we are now pairing up and taking our own bikes down in vans...it seems as long as the owner of the bike is present with a V5 it’s not a problem...

The question will be whether you will be deemed to be carrying "goods" or not, as I understand it. If you were riding a bike into the EU from the UK then you can do so with no problem, however since the bikes are presumably nor road-legal they could perhaps be considered "goods" which would potentially require an AT carnet (not a CPD). By the way I take it you're talking about the EU not "Europe" (the UK is still in Europe, although not now in the EU).

There is a big difference between a registered (plated) vehicle and an unregistered vehicle. There are all sorts of protocols, treaties, customs agreements, etc. in place to facilitate movement of registered (plated) vehicles from one country into another.
A specialized machine such as a race car or race bike is not a "vehicle" in the normally used sense or the word - therefore it is not covered by all the policies & practices that apply to plated vehicles.

Berin:
It is not unreasonable for a customs inspector to want to make sure that you have the permission of the owner to export those 2 or 3 motorcycles. So, if you have concerns, you might want to obtain a notarized statement from the owners of the bikes making clear that you have the owner's permission to export/import the bikes.
At the very least, make sure that you have the registration documents for all the motorcycles in hand when you cross borders with the bikes in the back of the van.
Carnets have nothing at all to do with this matter.

I've replied on the other thread on this subject.
I think one of us is just going to have to have a go and see what happens, for the good of the community
Carrying mates bikes before, I have always taken the V5 and a letter of authority to ride/take control of the vehicle, but the new rules appear to have been created from first principles without reference to previous agreements or arrangements, so we have to wait and see what our overlords have "negotiated"for us.
(Trying hard not to get into a Brexit discussion here )

Yes, as other have said, the ATA Carnet applies to goods only and a CARS issued carnet is for countries that require carnet’s so the paperwork needed would potentially be whatever you’d need as a freight forwarder or shipper.
I’ve done this several times before, always had v5’s and a letter of authority. V5’s and VIN numbers have been checked, never been asked for the letter of authority.
I can’t believe the intent, though, is to stop people taking their mates bike in a van.
We’re not booked till October, so hopefully we’ll have had a few sacrificial lambs through by then!
