Shipping Advice Wanted: Vancouver, BC to Vietnam

Dear Friends

We're starting to plan our ride in SE Asia and would like to begin in Vietnam. Does anyone have recent experience shipping there and recommendations on best ports and freight companies?

Many thanks
Sarah + Rick

I don't know if you've looked into this yet (and I'm no expert on the subject), but it's my understanding that large bikes are not legally importable into Vietnam. There are some reports of exceptions at specific overland border posts, using the services of specific personnel.

If I'm out of date or mistaken, I'll crawl back here and apologize properly.

Hope that's helpful.

Mark

@ Mark

Big bikes are not allowed. At the AirPort they will be rather strict. You would not be the first who gut stuck with their bike landed in Hanoi, but not allowed to enter. If you do an overland trip you could be lucky (depending on the customs officer and how much you like to pay.) Some were lucky.

You need just a invitation for Vietnam AND the big bike

For riding a motorcycle 175cc up, you and the motorcycle need a invetation from a company etc. We spend two month with our two BMW's in Vietnam February - April 2015, so it's possible and costs NOTHING! We showed just the invitation and that's it.

Good luck.

P.S. End of this year we are shipping the bikes from Laem Chabang to Vancouver BC

Very interesting.

Did you ship your bikes directly into Vietnam or did you get into the country using a land bordercrossing?

May I ask which company you used to get an invitation?

Thanks in advance!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
