Shipping two bikes in one crate

Hey all,

I'm looking into making a crate to ship two bikes in. The crate should not be wider then 1.40 meter. The plan is to make a crate that is reusable for both ways of shipping. Also, I'm considering to keep it for future travels.

On the internet I haven't found a lot of good information on crate building. Are there any members on the HUBB who can share their experience building a good crate?

I have never shipped two bikes in one crate but to save a few pounds have shipped two bikes to Chille on one lot of paperwork which nearly caused a problem as technically my name was on the paperwork I was temporarily importing two bikes which was not allowed. Even though the bikes were registered to two people both present it took some creative book keeping on the part of Valparaiso customs to get around it so just be aware of this possibility and mention it to your shipper.

See Shipping the Bike page here on HU for lots of tips.

Also note that today, all wood crates must be made of heat treated (bug free) wood, and stamped as such. Metal crates such as the one the Forwoods made to ship their Harley numerous times eliminate that potential issue. SOME countries aren't fussy, but they're becoming fewer.

If made of untreated wood, your crate CAN BE destroyed on entry, and you will pay a fee for that, and a fine. They may or may not remove the motorcycle first!
You MIGHT be able to get a treated wood motorcycle crate from your local dealer, and do a rebuild from there. I've done that myself and it works fine.

Also note that sometimes you can just load the bike on a pallet and save all that aggro, depending on where you're going and from where. Canada to Europe with Air Canada, Lufthansa to many destinations, Bogota to Panama and USA, all just their metal air ship pallets.

Do let us know what you do and how it works out!

Thanks so far! I've found that I need ISPM15 certified wood, and some countries will indeed burn everything if it doesn't comply to those rules.

I think that a crate made of a steel frame would be better, but I still have to look into the document issue. My girlfriends bike and my bike are registered on our own name, but we did have issues with her former bike when we entered Morocco in 2019. At that time her bike was still registered in my name.

We do plan to ship to Valparaiso, so we've been warned.
