UN 38.3 Test Results For Ocean Freight
TLDR: shipper requesting non-existing lithium battery test report for regular non-lithium battery.

I went with shipping my bike from KL to UK. However, the shipment is being delayed because the shipper requires UN 38.3 Lithium Ion Battery Test Results.

The bike was purged and battery disconnected by a BMW workshop and then crated and loaded into a container by the shipping agent. Only now is the shipper (i.e. the ship company not the agent) asking for UN 38.3.

I’ve told the agent that my BMW (2013 R1250 GSA Triple Black) has a lead acid glass mat no maintenance battery NOT lithium. But the shipper is still demanding a UN 38.3 report.

It’s looking like bike will miss shipping date unless this gets resolved .

Any suggestions?

I suggest you buy a spare lithium battery for home, and send him its test results.

good morning
consolidators specially in singapore are too scared of batteries. Best solution to remove the battery and send without to avoid additional headache, delays and finally costs. we have the same discussion from many points out of Asia

Fun fact: vice versa we do not have this problem

Thanks Olaf,

In the end my agent accessed the container in SIngapore (after it was loaded in KL) uncrated the bike and removed the battery. The bike is now safely somewhere back on board and halfway to Europe.

I was very happy that my Malaysian agent ate all the expenses associated with doing this and did not attempt to pass them onto me.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
