French Lad on a Long Way Home
Hello dear HU friends,
I'm (very) new on this forum and to say the truth, I've never really used a forum before but a friend of mine told me that HU is the place to go for advice on any motorbike adventure. And that is exactly what I'm about to start next year.
Im planning an overland trip back home (to the East of France) from Central Victoria in Australia through SE Asia, India, Middle East, Turkey and Eastern Europe. I'm planning on starting the trip next May so I still have a fair bit of time to plan but I would be so grateful to hear other stories and get advice from experienced riders and everyone else !
I'm building up a DR650 from 2008 with additional custom panniers (construction pictures soon) and have limited riding experience.
I will probably hang out on this forum more and more but feel free to tell me if something is off topic or if the answer is somewhere else already ! Cheers !
J.

Hi Jacques and welcome,
That sounds like the start of a plan and good choice of bike, take a look through the ride reports and see if anyone else has done that trip. The timing of your departure is quite important to avoid the monsoon if possible, I am not sure myself of the best time to head in that direction but am sure others will know.

Thanks heaps Mark !
I will try to find my way through this very rich forum and read some stories. I hope to reach the Australian tropics in the dry season but I'll look deeper into it. I'll keep you posted !

Hi, welcome to HU. Don't know if you realise India and some of the other countries you plan to ride through require a carnet, maybe a problem could be with you on a Australian titled motor bike and you being French. Although the bike being OZ registered there may not be a problem with you obtaining the required carnet, cost is rather high. There is a HU meet Jindabyne (Snowy Mountains) on the 16-19th of this month, lots of information by world and local riders.
Regards Ben

Thanks Bennett ! Indeed, I stumbled upon this Carnet thingy in my research and I feel like I might need to save up for this too, haha. Sadly, I won't be able to make it to the gathering in Jindabyne but I hope you guys will have a good time ! Cheers

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
