Ignition coils

Hi, i have a 1984 xt600 43f that i am close to finishing a restoration on, my ignition coil is a bit crusty and i have been looking for a new one.
Problem is all the ones i have seen have 2 spade terminals, the one on the bike just has one terminal with an orange lead that goes to the cdi.
I also have a 95 xt600 but these coils are different as the bikes have a tci unit (am i correct there ?).

So the question is can i fit any coil with a single lead/terminal ? If not does anyone know where to get one for a 43f xt600?

The single wire coil is the same coil but is grounded through the frame via the mounting bracket, so make sure there is good clean grounding (free of rust).

EDIT: I should add in that you can use a two wire coil on the older bikes, one of the wires will be obvious be the positive (think of that as orange) that plugs in the loom & then you have a spare wire with no home, simply put an eye lug on it & fix to the frame where the coil bolts (giving it a ground).

So Mezo you are saying that you can use an 90's model ignition coil that has two prongs on the older bikes?

Yes but why not use the right one? i needed to rule out a coil as a fault & didn't have a spare so i used a two wire coil which i had laying around & grounded the negative to the frame.

I know that you know your stuff Mezo so no disrespect, but I couldn't fit a 2 prong coil to my 43F. They are physically bigger.

The coil went on (I can't remember if the bolt holes lined up OK or if I used just one bolt). But I do remember I couldn't get the tank back on because of the extra size. And I remember how much I swore at that point.

Correct i used just one bolt as well i was just proving or disproving a faulty coil, my tank was off the bike.

Im not saying this is a replacement, all im saying is i have used one to prove my coil was faulty.

It was a temp bodge guys.

Hey if you're going to spend the money you might as well do it right the first time.

Not to threadjack but I have a quick question.

I bought a 3tb ignition coil from Caltric and it looks like the connector blades are swapped. If I orient it the same way as the stock unit the fatter and skinnier blades are in the opposite position. Is there a way to test if they actually are swapped or which is the power and the ground side?
